Dishwasher Making a Loud Noise? What Each Sound Means
Dishwashers should hum quietly. Grinding, buzzing, rattling, or high-pitched whining means something's wrong β and with noises, what you do next matters. Some noises mean "stop using it immediately." Here's the decoder. Hear something bad? Call A One Dishwasher Repair WA at (253) 549-3002 before it gets expensive.
Grinding / Chewing Sound
Most likely: the chopper blade. Many dishwashers (Maytag, Whirlpool, KitchenAid especially) grind food with a chopper blade. When it jams on a bone fragment or wears out, you get grinding β and if you keep running it, the jammed chopper burns out the wash motor. Stop using the dishwasher and call us. A chopper job is ~$200; a chopper + motor is ~$400.
Loud Humming, No Washing
Stuck wash motor or pump. The motor's trying to turn but can't β often debris, sometimes a seized bearing. Don't keep running cycles hoping it'll clear; you'll overheat the motor.
Rattling / Clanking
Spray arm hitting dishes. Usually just loading β a tall pan or utensil blocking the arm's rotation. Rearrange and listen. If it persists with a normal load, the arm itself may be cracked or loose.
High-Pitched Whine
Drain pump straining. Partially blocked pump or a pump on its way out. It'll get louder over days/weeks, then quit. Replace it now on your schedule, not as an emergency later. A straining pump is also a common cause of a dishwasher not draining.
Banging / Thumping
Water hammer or loose mounting. If the unit isn't anchored, it shifts during the cycle and thumps. Also check: was it recently installed? Improper mounting is an installer issue.
The Golden Rule of Dishwasher Noises
New noise + keep running it = bigger repair. Grinding becomes motor failure. Whining becomes pump failure. A same-day $89 diagnostic (waived with repair) is always cheaper than the cascade. (253) 549-3002.
Noisy Dishwasher FAQs
Is it safe to run a noisy dishwasher?
Grinding or loud humming: no β stop it. Rattling from loading: yes, just reload properly.
My Maytag grinds β is that normal?
Maytags with choppers make some grinding during the food-grinding phase. Constant loud grinding is not normal β that's a worn or jammed chopper.
